Forget the courtroom dramas on Tv. Being a lawyer requires more than being eloquent in court. This intellectually challenging and rewarding profession need a variety of skills.
Generally, a large portion of a lawyer's time is spent on research. A vast amount of material has to be constantly read, analysed and then used effectively. It is detailed work, requiring logical thinking with much interpretation of the law, ultimately leading to workable solutions. Then there is the writing part. These should be clear and precise, suitable for e.g. writing arguments, contracts or wills.
In between these tasks, lawyers are in contact with clients and witnesses to gather information. Therefore, having good people skills will be an added advantage. Potential lawyers should also be comfortable dealing with conflicts, negotiating and building relationships. When thy do appear in court, they have to think quickly on their feet and speak with authority.
